Is 3D Solutech PLA filament any good?
When you first get into 3D Printing, it can often feel a bit daunting to pick a filament type. Most people will start with PLA because it is the most widely used and is supported by most machines. Almost all machines will come with a test sample of PLA, usually white or clear. But, that won’t last long and you will find yourself scouring the internet for your next roll or two. You will quickly find that although there are many types of filament like PLA, PLA+, ABS, PETG, TPU, the list goes on. Just like types of filament, there are even more brands and colors of filament to choose from. The options are endless and can be overwhelming at times. That is where filament reviews and tests come into play. Depending on what you are printing, you might be after different attributes that need to be factored in while choosing a filament. Things like strength, rigidity, flexibility, heat resistance, UV resistance, Chemical resistance and many, many more. That is why filament reviews and tests are so important. They can help you narrow down your search and pick the right one. Or, you can have the fun yourself and test as many as your budget allows. After all, filament is cheap!
This brings me to my current test of the 3D Solutech Silver Metal PLA. I have been aware of the company for some time and had ordered a roll a while back so that my son and I could print some Beskar ingots for another Mandalorian project we are working on. The color seemed right and I had heard good things about 3D Solutech. The price was a steal at only $15.99 per 1 KG spool. For the price, I wasn’t expecting much as I have had other similar priced filament perform poorly. To my surprise, the first test print came out great.
As you can see from the pictures, the Benchy came out great! The color was nice and uniform with the metallic shine that was expected. Go here for my Prusaslicer profiles and the filament settings I use in Prusaslicer.
I also ordered a “See Through Yellow” roll that I have yet to print a test with but I expect the same results. Overall, I would recommend this filament to anyone looking to stock up and not break the bank. I have already placed an order for 10 more rolls!
